Professional Medical Career

Naveen was so dedicated to his patients and his pursuit of excellence in Neurology, that he neglected to look after his own health. In spite of feeling unwell in the spring of 2006, Naveen kept on working until he could no longer function. In July of 2006, he was diagnosed with Leukemia. He received intense chemo therapy, a bone marrow transplant, and excellent medical care from the Vancouver hospitals that took almost a year. Although Naveen had not quite fully recovered, he returned to his residency in August of 2007. He was still on various medications and treatments, but he refused to be treated differently and continued his work as if nothing had happened. Severe GVHD (Graft Vs Host Disease) was affecting his lungs but Naveen continued to take on full load of work. He was serving as Chief Resident in his final year of residency when he relapsed in April of 2009. He was told that this time it was terminal and that he had only a few weeks to a few months to live. Even after receiving the bad news so close to his goal, Naveen was gracious as always, and thanked all the doctors, nurses and the hospital staff for everything they did for him. While his parents were fighting their tears, he smiled and said “…we had some great times, didn’t we Mom?...” He never complained about fighting a very painful battle. He was more worried about the people he loved that he would be leaving behind, than anything else. He remained cheerful and tried to make his family and friends smile with his unique sense of humor throughout his remaining days.
